Bo Bichette gets concerning contract update amid uncertain Blue Jays’ future

Is there any scenario where the Toronto Blue Jays would consider bringing Bo Bichette back? Bichette, one of the better shortstops in Major League Baseball, seems like a guarantee to leave in free agency.

It’s a bit questionable why the Blue Jays are letting him walk as easily as it seems, but many expect that to be the case.

After giving Vladimir Guerrero Jr. a $500 million long-term extension, there would be some sense in bringing Bichette back to pair the two for the next decade plus.

Instead, that doesn’t seem to be in the Blue Jays’ plans, but Bichette will likely land a decent payday for himself regardless.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, that number could be $100-plus million, with him writing that Bichette has likely lost a few million over the past few years due to his offensive production.

“Two years ago, Bichette looked like a lock for $300 million. A brutal 2024 soured his stock, and while his average has climbed early this season, the power he showed in three consecutive 20-plus-homer seasons remains AWOL. Because he’ll be a 28-year-old shortstop, Bichette can get nine figures. He also could opt for a short-term deal with opt-outs to maximize his opportunities to hit the market after a strong season,” he wrote.

If Bichette were only $100 million in the free agency market, it would be wise for the Blue Jays to bring him back.

Even if his power numbers aren’t what they once were, getting a real feel for where that stands is tough. He only played 81 games in 2024, and while it’s far too early to press the panic button in 2025, he has just one home run.
