Yann Sommer stats, best saves as Inter goalkeeper stars vs. Barcelona in astonishing Champions League semifinal

Inter needed heroic performances from the entire lineup to upset Barcelona in the semifinals of the 2024/25 Champions League.

While the likes of Francesco Acerbi and Davide Frattesi were the unlikely match-winners on the attacking end, Yann Sommer was utterly otherworldly in goal.

The Switzerland international conceded six goals across the two legs, but he was still one of the star performers across the pair of semifinal matches. He made a host of glittering saves on many of Barcelona’s attacking superstars, keeping Inter within reach of the match before they would dramatically qualify for the final in extra-time at the San Siro.

The Sporting News detailed the best moments for Sommer across the two matches and compiled his overall numbers to show just how incredible he was against one of Europe’s most formidable attacking sides.

Yann Sommer’s best saves vs. Barcelona in second leg

In the second leg, Yann Sommer was utterly heroic. The Inter goalkeeper made three utterly outrageous saves that stand out above the rest.

Early in the second half with Inter up 2-1 in the match and 5-4 on aggregate, Sommer stood tall as Eric Garcia wilted under pressure, putting a shot right down the middle of the goal that allowed the Inter goalkeeper to slide acrobatically across his line and make a sensational save on a shot that had a value of 0.53 xGOT, meaning it statistically should result in a goal half the time.

Then, in the 77th minute, Sommer would crop up again, this time stopping Lamine Yamal who looked to curl the ball with his left foot into the top-left corner from a good 27 yards out, only to be denied by a sensational stop that was worth 0.34 xGOT.

An 87th-minute save on Raphinha wasn’t enough to keep Barcelona from going in front, but once Inter had reached extra-time on Francesco Acerbi’s heroic last-gasp equalizer, Sommer was back to his best.

It was Lamine Yamal again who would rue the form of his opponent, as Sommer dove with maybe the most glittering save of the match, preventing the Barca teen again from seeking the top-left corner with a curler.
