4 Chargers veterans who could surprisingly be left off this year’s 53-man roster

The Los Angeles Chargers will go into the 2025 season prepared to be one of the top teams in the AFC. After making the playoffs in Jim Harbaugh’s first year as head coach, the team will be looking to take the next step.

Of course, there is much to figure out first. The team will open training camp in July and have some minicamps prior to that, looking to evaluate the roster as much as possible. In the end, the team will be faced with some tough decisions as the young additions to this year’s roster could push some of the experienced vets off of it.

Looking at the most recent 53-man roster prediction, these four veterans could be on the outside looking in at the end of the preseason.

Los Angeles Chargers 53-man roster prediction: 4 veteran players who may be left off

Trey Lance, Quarterback

Some fans will argue that the Chargers will keep three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster as Trey Lance was signed for a reason, and they may be accurate. But the Chargers could soon find out what the 49ers and Cowboys already have, which is that Lance is not good.

The Chargers could keep Lance as the emergency third QB, but they can do that by cutting him and adding him to the practice squad, assuming no other team would claim him off waivers.

Deane Leonard, Cornerback

The free-agent signing of Benjamin St-Juste and the drafting of Trikweze Bridges adds a lot of questions to the cornerback position, which should be a great competition this summer.

Deane Leonard could be the odd man out, but others would argue that Ja’Sir Taylor even Bridges could be kept off instead. Those would be valid arguments.

Hassan Haskins, Running Back

Jim Harbaugh brought in Hassan Haskins due to their connection back to Michigan but Haskins has never been anything close to what he was at Michigan in the NFL.

Last season, the team seemed to favor Haskins over rookie Kimani Vidal in most situations as Vidal was a gameday inactive for much of the season. But now that the team has Najee Harris and Omarion Hampton, the hope will be that Vidal has developed enough to be the team’s everyday No. 3 RB.

Del’Shawn Phillips, Linebacker

Del’Shawn Phillips, who was signed as a free agent this offseason, won’t make this team if the Chargers only keep four inside linebackers, in all likelihood. He will have to make the case that the team should keep five, which would then take from another position.

Phillips could have a slim chance of beating Denzel Perryman out if the team chooses to go with only four, but that could be a tall order.
