Ex-76ers guard reflects on miserable Philadelphia stint with surprising gratitude

The 2016 Philadelphia 76ers didn’t have much to brag about regarding team success. That team went 10-72, which isn’t the worst record in Sixers’ history. However, for all of their failings, that Sixers team had multiple players who carved their niche in the NBA from their time in Philadelphia, including T.J. McConnell.

McConnell came to the Sixers as an undrafted free agent in 2015 and has since become one of the NBA’s best backup point guards. During McConnell’s appearance on “Old Man and the Three,” McConnell reflected on his time on the 2016 Sixers.

“When I got there, I wasn’t really focused on if this place is a [expletive]-show or not, and truly when I look back on it, it wasn’t,” McConnell said. “Brett (Brown) and his staff made it so easy and fun to come in every day, even though we were losing, and that’s a credit to them.

“…So it was easy to come in every day when you’re being coached like that, but I was just trying to soak up as much knowledge and learn as much as I could and do everything I can to make the team, and when I did, I wasn’t focused on the wins and losses. I shouldn’t have even been there.”

McConnell played for the Sixers from 2015 to 2019. During that time, Philadelphia went from winning 10 games to 51 in his last season there. Also, the Sixers came within inches of making the Eastern Conference Finals.

McConnell may not have had much playoff success in Philadelphia, but he was one of their more inspirational stories during that period.
