Red Sox could swing trade for $69 million All-Star after Triston Casas brutal injury

Triston Casas was having a slow start to the season, but was trying to get to being the player everyone expected going into the season. However, a knee injury has derailed his season now.

Casas was carried off the field on a stretcher after going down at first base with what manager Alex Cora described as a “significant knee injury.”

“It’s a significant knee injury. He’s at the hospital right now getting more tests and all that stuff,” Cora told reporters, “We’ll have more information tomorrow.”

NESN’s Keagan Stiefel tabbed former Seattle Mariners All-Star Ty France as a trade option to replace Casas after his injury. However, he noted that it would take a lot of convincing.

“Doug Mientkiewicz once got traded in the middle of a series between the Red Sox and Twins, literally walking from one clubhouse to another to join his new team,” wrote Stiefel. “Could the same thing happen to France? No, probably not. Minnesota is too early into its season to trade away a key offensive contributor, but he is on a one-year deal, so perhaps there could be some persuading done if Boston wants to really go for it and get the best possible replacement.”

The Twins are 13-20, but France is having a resurgent year. Since his 2022 All-Star campaign, he had struggled. He hit .250 in 2023 and .234 last season. He has hit 25 home runs in two seasons combined after hitting 20 in 2022 alone. However, this season he has a .281 average with three home runs.

He will be a free agent after this season, and Spotrac projects him to sign a five-year, $69 million deal. As the Twins’ season goes on, and their place in the standings becomes clearer, they could be willing to trade France. If Casas’ injury is as serious as it looks, the Red Sox will need to find a reliable replacement.
