Cowboys could swing surprise trade for struggling AFC West receiver

The Dallas Cowboys have not brought in a receiver to pair with CeeDee Lamb this offseason. However, they could swing a trade to bring one to Dallas.

The team is currently slated to have Jalen Tolbert as their No.2 receiver. If they want to bring in a high-upside player without directly removing Tolbert from his role, they could contact the Los Angeles Chargers. Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay tabbed Quentin Johnston as a target for the Cowboys.

The Chargers spent a second-round pick on Tre Harris from the University of Mississippi. They also signed Mike Williams. Those moves, paired with Ladd McConkey’s breakout, could spell the end for Johnston’s time in Los Angeles. He was the 23rd overall pick in 2023, but has drastically underperformed.

“With teams like the Dallas Cowboys desperate for receivers right now, there’s a chance the Chargers could get at least a middle-round pick in exchange for his services,” wrote Kay. “Johnston is still just 23 years old, is on a cheap contract and had a 13-catch, 186-yard explosion during the regular season finale—displaying upside that could boost his value during trade talks.”

He has 1,142 yards and 10 touchdowns in two seasons. He scored eight touchdowns in 2024. However, drops remain a problem for the young receiver.

A fresh start in Dallas could do him some good. It’s no coincidence that he played better in 2024 after the Chargers got McConkey. It took the pressure off of him as the team’s top target. On the Cowboys, he would be able to benefit from Lamb and Tolbert being the top options. That could allow him to continue to grow and potentially break out.
