Mets owner Steve Cohen breaks silence on Juan Soto struggles

The New York Mets made the biggest move of the offseason by signing Juan Soto to a historic 15-year, $765 million contract. However, he has struggled out of the gates for his new team.

Soto is slashing .250/.374/.398 through 30 games. He has just three home runs and 12 RBIs. Owner Steve Cohen does not seem concerned, however.

“If you ask him, he’d probably say it’s not going as what he hoped,” Cohen told SNY’s Danny Abriano. “That’s not what the back of his baseball card would say. But saying that, there’s a lot of subtle things that he does that I really think matters. The way that he works the count, makes pitchers throw extra pitches, really matters.

“Then he gets on base, and Pete can drive him in. And so Pete is seeing better pitches. It’s very subtle how that works, and you can’t just look at it as — in a very narrow sense.

“And saying that, I’m not worried about Juan. He’s singularly focused on baseball. He’s a pure hitter. Let’s have this discussion at the end of the year.”

Soto is one of the best players of this generation. He is coming off a 40-home run season with the New York Yankees. Even though he is struggling, the Mets own the best record in baseball, 21-9. Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor have helped carry the load while Soto gets going. Whenever that may be, the Mets will become even more dangerous.

There is still a long way to go, but as long as the Mets make the postseason, Soto will have a chance to erase all of the regular season woes in October.
