‘Easy money’: George Kambosos’ world title challenge locked in as Aussie ups the stakes

George Kambosos’ shot at becoming a two-weight world champion has been confirmed, with the Aussie to challenge Richardson Hitchins for the IBF super lightweight title at the Madison Square Garden Theatre in New York City on June 14 (June 15 in Australia).

The fight sees Kambosos return to the site of his greatest victory, having scored an upset win over another New Yorker in Teofimo Lopez to claim the unified lightweight titles back in 2021.

Going down on the Sydneysider’s 32nd birthday, Kambosos is also looking to up the stakes, pushing Hitchins, 27, to bet some of his purse on the outcome.

The pair have been going back and forth on social media in recent days, with a $20,000 bet seemingly agreed on the result.

The fight will be Kambosos’ second at 140-pounds, having made his debut with a 12-round unanimous decision win over countryman and late-notice replacement Jake Wyllie in March.

For Hitchins, he’ll be hoping to make it two straight wins over Aussie fighters after he defeated Queensland’s Liam Paro via split decision in December to win the IBF strap.

“George Kambosos is not on my level. Never has been, never will be.” Hitchins said.

“He’s talked himself into this fight, and now he’s going to pay the price for running his mouth.

“He had the biggest win of his career and crowning moment in this building, and on June 14 I end his career in that same building.

“This is my time, my division, and I plan on putting on a spectacular performance and showing the world that I am one of the best fighters on the planet.”

Kambosos will go into the bout a significant underdog, although he was in that position against Lopez and emerged victorious.

“The stars align again, history always repeats, I head back to a place I created legacy at, a home where I may be regarded as an underdog again but a familiar place that I thrive in,” Kambosos said.

“I stand 2-0 at Madison Square Garden, the world’s most famous arena, and on June 14, I will make it 3-0 when I rip Hitchins’ belt off him and break his will, take his heart and ruin his undefeated career.”
