Celtics make crucial call on Jaylen Brown’s availability before Game 4 vs. Magic

Jaylen Brown has been the perfect Robin to Jayson Tatum’s Batman in this series for the Boston Celtics—at least as far as his Batman would be concerned. With Tatum in during Games 1 and 3, Brown took 14 shots apiece and scored in double digits both times.

In Game 2, with Tatum out, he put on his own cape with 36 points. Brown has also been rebounding and defending very well during this series too. And even when he didn’t score a lot in Games 1 and 3, he was still efficient.

That’s why his availability is always crucial for Boston, Tatum or no. He popped up on the Celtics’ injury report a little bit later than usual prior to Game 3, which rightly caused concern.

Generally, a late injury report addition is a bad sign. But Brown didn’t look any worse for wear during his 19-point performance in the loss. However, he was once again listed as questionable ahead of Game 4.

Jaylen Brown Game 4 status revealed by Celtics

He was announced as questionable a full day before the game, but in the end, Brown will be able to gut it out as the Celtics announced an hour before tipoff that the three-time All-Star would be good to go once again. Unfortunately, Jrue Holiday remains out with his hamstring injury though.

The Brown issue was being classed as a posterior impingement to his right knee on the official injury report. That likely means it was in the back of the joint, though you might have to consult your medical dictionary for the full debrief on ‘impingement’. All we can tell you is that it involves something pinching in there.

But Brown will play through it for the second straight game, and that’s huge for the Celtics. Being up 2-1, the next game is crucial. The series will either be tied on Sunday evening, or the Celtics will take a 3-1 lead from which only a handful of teams have ever faltered in NBA history.

It’s worth noting that without Holiday, with Brown and Tatum both battling injuries, and with Kristaps Porzingis having one of his roughest stretches of play this year, it does open the door up for an Orlando upset here. The Magic just have to walk through the threshold.

That all-important Game 4 in Orlando’s gym on Sunday evening tips off at 7PM E.T. on TNT/Max.
