Liverpoolwere 45 minutes away from the Premier League title after opening up a dominant 3-1 halftime lead against Tottenham at Anfield.

Arne Slot’s men were given a rapturous reception on a sun-drenched Merseyside afternoon, knowing they only needed a point to complete their imperious march to glory.

Dominic Solanke headed home from James Maddison’s 12th-minute corner to give Spurs the lead and briefly silence the masses, but Luis Diaz slid in Dominik Szoboszlai’s cross for an equaliser that was given by VAR after an offside call on the field.

Alexis Mac Allister rifled in a fabulous second after Ryan Gravenberch snaffled possession from Archie Gray on the edge of the Spurs box. By the time Cody Gakpo capitalised on some poor set-piece defending 11 minutes before the interval, the party was in full swing.

55 mins: Vicario gives he ball straight to Gravenberch, Salah and Szoboszlai can’t capitalise. Tottenham are so defensively lax it seems to have robbed Liverpool of all attacking intensity. I’m not sure this is the Postecoglou masterplan, but here we are.

51 mins: Liverpool players queuing up. Gakpo decides to square to Salah but the pass is loose. 

2nd Half: Kickoff

We’re back. Sarr and Kulusevski on for Gray and Maddison at the break for Spurs. Liverpool attacking the Kop end.

Halftime

Liverpool are 45 minutes away from the title. Even if this Tottenham pull a couple of goals back you’d bank on them conceding several more. Slot’s men have been bang up for it as you’d imagine and Mac Allister’s goal was fabulous. But Spurs have been as obliging as you’d expect in their current state.

45 mins: Tel marauds down the left but the cross is straight into Alisson’s gloves. Four additional minutes to enjoy.

42 mins: Just a bit of drift into the game and Tel has a chance at the far post after Porro gets down the Liverpool left. It’s an excellent last-ditch challenge from Konate and they’ve both taken a bit of a whack.

34 mins: GOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!! Cody Gakpo!!!!!

Here’s a Dutchman you’ve heard of. Spurs defend with risible limpness, Gakpo shuffles the ball out of his feet and sticks a finish across Vicario.

31 mins: Liverpool free-kick in a shooting position. Alexander-Arnold manages to persuade Mac Allister and Szoboszlai to lash it halfway up the Anfield Road End. He might have to wait a while for his next go.

28 mins: Maddison whips in a free-kick from the left. Solanke gets up to glance and loop one that Alisson has to tip over. Konate gets himself on the end of this Maddison corner.

24 mins: GOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL!!!!! Alexis Mac Allister!!!!!!

WOOF! Spurs can’t get out, but they keep trying it. Liverpool are all over them like a rash. Gravenberch ransacks Gray on the edge of the area and Mac Allister larrups one into the top corner. Unstoppable.

20 mins: Ball in the Spurs net again and but Salah was off this time. Even so, it’s dicey stuff from Spurs, who have midfielders bursting through their line. Gakpo the man denied by the referee’s assistant.

18 mins: GOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL!!!!! Luis Diaz!!!!!!!

Yep, nothing wrong with that. Diaz held his run perfectly and has a close-range goal to mark his 100th Premier League appearance following one work from Salah and Szoboszlai. More importantly, he’s turned the Anfield volume back on.

Oh me, oh my! That wasn’t on the agenda. Solanke rises above a napping Konate and Gravenberch and powers home a right-wing corner.

10 mins: Liverpool corner after Vicario can’t keep Gakpo’s attempt in play. From the set piece, the Dutchman sets himself up for an audacious overhead kick. That wasn’t far away.

7 mins: There’s going to be room against Spurs and, after Tel loses the ball in the Liverpool box, the hosts spring forward. Salah arrows a ball into the box form the left but he and Diaz have their wires crosses and the Colombian makes the wrong run.

3 mins: Danso coughs up a free-kick about 30 yards out. Liverpool work it short and out to Salah, who is allowed to cut inside and fire a sighter over.

What is required is they have to work really hard. Tottenham is a team that runs a lot. If you’re not intense and not ready for them they can hurt you a lot. Fans can play a big part in this. The louder they are the more energy the players will have.

Spurs captain Son Heung-min remains out with a foot injury but Spurs suffered no new injuries from their latest defeat at home to Nottingham Forest. 

Destiny Udogie, James Maddison, Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson were all rested for that game and Postecoglou admits rotation is likely with Spurs’ season now set to stand of fall on whether or not they lift the Europa League.

“With the programme we have coming up, Thursday is a big night for us, so it will be a matter of playing a few that need the game time and others we feel may need less exposure, we’ll have a look at that,” he told his club’s official website.

Radu Dragusin remains a long-term absentee after ACL surgery.
