Timberwolves predicted to cut ties with Julius Randle in trade for $194 million West superstar

Despite the 2025 season not going as well for them as the one before, the Minnesota Timberwolves are in a good place. Minnesota is up 2-1 over the Los Angeles Lakers after their Game 3 win last night, which shows how promising their playoff run could be if all goes their way.

There’s no telling how far the Timberwolves could go in the 2025 NBA Playoffs, but if they don’t accomplish their goals, they could try to acquire a big fish like Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant. Sports Illustrated’s Kevin Hicks proposed the following trade that would send Durant to the Timberwolves.

Timberwolves Receive: Durant

Suns Receive: Julius Randle, Rob Dillingham, 2028 First Round Pick

There wasn’t an explanation for why the Timberwolves would make the trade, but it’s self-explanatory for why they would. Minnesota would get Durant, who is still one of the NBA’s best scorers, coming off a season where he averaged 26.6 points while shooting 52.7% at 36 years old.

The Suns are coming off a disastrous season, and their best option is to retool, which means trading Durant. Phoenix tried to trade the former MVP back to Golden State at the NBA trade deadline, but Durant nixed it.

That may have more to do with Durant’s lack of interest in re-joining the Warriors than his desire to stay with the Suns. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Timberwolves had interest in Durant, and he expects them to have interest again this offseason. If Minnesota brings Durant in, they could assemble the best team in franchise history.
