After passing on Shedeur Sanders, Steelers and Aaron Rodgers are still talking

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to wait on a decision from future Hall of Fame quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, but a few recent updates are certainly good news.

According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Rodgers and the Steelers are indeed still talking, although there is still no timetable for a decision.

“The Steelers and Aaron Rodgers are continuing to maintain dialogue as the team waits on the future Hall of Famer’s free agency decision, a source tells me,” she reported. “No timetable has been set by either side.”

While Russini wasn’t able to offer a timetable for a decision, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio is hearing that Rodgers could announce his decision to sign with the Steelers following the 2025 NFL draft.

“The Steelers are all in for Aaron Rodgers,” he said. “I had somebody tell me recently that he’s going to announce after the draft that he’s going to Pittsburgh. It will happen. Not sure when, but it will happen.”

All of this news comes on the heels of the Steelers passing on Shedeur Sanders in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft. Doing that left the Steelers with one less option as things stand now, which only makes them more dependent on Rodgers.

Pittsburgh could still take a quarterback, of course, but a mid-round signal-caller isn’t likely to be ready to start in Year 1.

Russini’s tidbit about there not being a timetable given by other side refutes an earlier report from Josina Anderson, who reported that the Steelers told Rodgers they hoped for him to make a decision before the draft.

“I’m told the Steelers communicated with Aaron Rodgers at the beginning of the week that they would like to receive an answer from him before the Draft (at least 48 hours), per league source,” Anderson wrote.

The Steelers are no doubt in a tough spot, as the failure to land Rodgers will leave them without a sure starter on the roster. However, it appears things are moving in a positive direction and we continue to believe Rodgers will play in Pittsburgh.
