How can Liverpool win the 2024/25 Premier League title vs. Tottenham: Points needed, tiebreakers, remaining fixtures

Liverpool fans head into their Premier League clash with Tottenham on April 27 anticipating confirmation as champions at full-time.

The Reds have dragged the title race to the final few weeks of the 2024//25 season but Arne Slot’s team are now on the brink of EPL glory for just the second time in the club’s history.

Jurgen Klopp famously secured a first-ever EPL crown in 2020, but the celebrations were muted, as Jordan Henderson lifted the trophy inside an empty Anfield due to Covid-19 restrictions.

A sell-out crowd at Anfield will be hopeful of finally seeing Virgil van Dijk hoist the trophy aloft against Spurs but Slot’s charges still have work to do.

Arsenal’s inconsistency has played a role in Liverpool’s drive for the title with Mikel Arteta’s team held a midweek 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace.

Slot and his players are clear in their mission against Spurs – but what exactly is needed to finally tick the title box?

How can Liverpool win the Premier League title vs. Tottenham?

The permutations are relatively straightforward for Slot with Arsenal not in league action again until May 3.

Liverpool are currently top of the EPL rankings, with 79 points from 33 games, with the second-place Gunners on 67 from 34 matches.

The maximum points total Mikel Arteta’s team can reach this season – if they will all four of their remaining games – is 79.

That means if Liverpool win or draw against Tottenham they will be confirmed as champions.

A defeat to Ange Postecoglou’s visitors would leave Liverpool on 79 points and mathematically keep Arsenal in the race into May.

That is because the first tiebreaker in the Premier League is goal difference – if two teams finish a season level on points – but Liverpool have the advantage there too currently with +44 compared to +34.

If Slot’s team lose to Spurs, their position remains unchanged, as they still need just a single point [via a draw] or three [via a win] from their remaining four matches.

Liverpool’s remaining Premier League fixtures:

  • Chelsea (A): May 4
  • Arsenal (H): May 11
  • Brighton (A): May 19
  • Crystal Palace (H): May 25

If Liverpool seal the title against Tottenham, they are expected to be given a traditional guard of honour, away at Chelsea on May 4.

Their first home game as confirmed champions could be against Arsenal on May 11.

Liverpool’s 2024/25 stats vs. 2019/20 title

Liverpool’s EPL title win in 2019/20 ended a three-decade wait for a league trophy with their last success coming before the creation of the Premier League in 1992, via the old 1989/90 Division One crown.

Klopp’s charges ended the season with 99 points – the club’s highest-ever in the Premier League – and whopping 18 ahead of second-place Manchester City.

The former Liverpool boss broke the 90-point mark three times in his Anfield career with 97 in 2018/19 and 92 in 2021/22 – both times finishing second to Pep Guardiola’s City.

If Slot wins all of his remaining games, he can end a superb debut season on 95 points as a maximum, but he cannot match Klopp’s benchmark in 2025.

95 points would also be the joint-fifth highest Premier League points total in history, with Klopp’s 97 in 2019 the highest for a non-title winner, and City remain as the outright No.1 with 100 points from 2017/18.

Klopp’s Liverpool scored 85 league goals in their 2020 title winning campaign but their best tally under the German was in 2021/22 with 94.

The overall club record still belongs to Brendan Rodgers, as his Liverpool team netted 101 goals in 2013/14, again finishing behind City in second – and Guardiola boasts the outright goal record in a single season from 2017/18 with 106.

With five games to go, Slot’s team have 75 goals scored, so they are unlikely to match Klopp’s totals. 22 goals conceded in 2018/19 is their best defensive tally – but with 31 already let in – Slot will also miss that mark.
