The Dallas Cowboys have the 12th overall pick in the upcoming draft. However, after a relatively quiet offseason, Jerry Jones is not ruling out a blockbuster trade for an outside addition.
The Cowboys have plenty of needs they could address at No.12. However, Jones has revealed that the Cowboys are looking at other avenues to fill their roster needs.
“We’re looking at two things that could happen before or after the draft,” Jones said, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Nick Harris. “Two pretty substantive trades. Been working on today.”
Jones’ comments make it seem like they are exploring a trade for a superstar player who could make a huge impact on their team. Players like T.J. Watt, George Pickens, Trey Hendrickson and Jaire Alexander are rumored to be available via trade. Any one of those players could make an immediate impact on the Cowboys.
However, if the Cowboys were to make a deal before the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday, they may have to part ways with draft capital in this upcoming draft. However, waiting until after the draft would mortgage next year’s picks, most likely.

Trading for a player like Watt or Hendrickson would also mean handing them a lucrative extension, which is the reason they are available. The Cowboys would need to be wise about making such a trade so as not to prevent them from extending Micah Parsons. There is also the remote possibility that the trade Jones is referring to could be, in fact, trading Parsons for a haul of picks. Even though it is not likely, it could be something the Cowboys explore. They reportedly discussed what type of return he could net earlier in the offseason.
