Following their hard-fought win over Fulham on Sunday, Chelsea’s obligation to buy Jadon Sancho from Manchester United has officially been triggered.
Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Fulham guarantees them a place above fifteenth in the table. This achievement has triggered an obligation clause in Sancho’s loan deal, which means Chelsea must pay Man Utd £25 million to sign him.
However, Stamford Bridge chiefs still have the option of pulling out of the deal. It is reported that club chiefs will save their final decision on Sancho’s future until the end of the season.
If they choose to terminate the agreement, they will be forced to pay Man Utd a penalty fee of £5m.
Though the Englishman has endured a turbulent time at Stamford Bridge since arriving from the Red Devils, a recent upturn in form suggests that he has shown enough promise to convince the Chelsea hierarchy to keep him at the club.
The 25-year-old has scored three goals and has contributed four assists in 27 Premier League matches this term. However, his season included a 16-game goal drought dating back to early December, which he finally ended with a stunning goal against Ipswich Town earlier this month.
Despite experiencing some patchy form since the turn of the year, Chelsea have continued to narrowly maintain their spot in the top five in the Premier League table.

Sancho’s story so far in England
Former Manchester City academy star Sancho signed for Man Utd from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2021 for a fee of £73m. However, poor form, mental health issues, and injuries heavily hurt his first two seasons at the club.
Just when he looked to kick into gear at Old Trafford, Sancho had a fallout with then-United boss Erik Ten Hag, and he was sent on loan back to Dortmund for the second half of the 2023/24 season, where he played a key part in helping the German side reach the final of the UEFA Champions League.
However, the Bundesliga side could not afford to keep him owing to his wage demands before Chelsea swooped to take him on loan last summer.
