Yankees called ‘ideal landing spot’ for $20 million former Rockies All-Star

It seems clear at this point that the New York Yankees will be in on starting pitchers across baseball until the trade deadline.

Few rotations have been hit with the injury bug like the Yankees, and New York is still scrambling to catch up after losing ace Gerrit Cole for the season. The stats are telling as well: The Yankees have the fourth-worst starting pitching ERA (4.74) in all of baseball.

For the Yankees to firmly establish themselves as the favorites in the American League, they’ll need more starting pitching. But they also don’t have a loaded farm system, and one of their most highly-regarded prospects (right-hander Will Warren) is already in the rotation.

What sort of starting pitching will the Yankees even be able to acquire? One baseball writer isn’t overly optimistic the names they’ll bring in will be awe-inspiring.

On Tuesday, Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller named the Yankees as the “ideal landing spot” for Colorado Rockies right-hander Germán Márquez, a 2021 National League All-Star who is off to a rough start in 2025 after barely pitching in either of the last two seasons.

“The Yankees are more than scraping by with Will Warren and Carlos Carrasco in the regular rotation, but they are almost certainly going to be in the market for a rental starting pitcher this summer, even if Luis Gil (lat strain) returns in June looking no worse for wear,” Miller wrote.

“Chances are the Bronx Bombers will aim a bit higher than Márquez, though the presumed ability to get him for next to nothing beyond salary relief for Colorado could be the right asking price.”

Márquez, 30, owns a 4.48 career ERA, but that has to be taken in the context of Coors Field, where pitches don’t spin like they should and hitters take advantage of the massive outfield. His 4.05 FIP suggests he’s an above-average starter at his best.

In 2025, though, he hasn’t been at his best at all, pitching to an 8.27 ERA after getting shellacked in his last start against the Los Angeles Dodgers. But that could make him more affordable, with the Rockies trying to get out of the second and final year of his $20 million contract.
