Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards is one of the NBA’s brightest young stars and has one of the most magnetic personalities in all of sports.
Part of what makes Edwards unique is his unfiltered approach to media obligations, which provides an authenticity that is rare among professional athletes. He is quickly learning that sometimes, his authenticity comes with a price.
Through the first three months of the NBA season, Edwards racked up over a quarter of a million dollars in fines, with a hefty amount coming in December alone. While things slowed down after, he still has added over $100,000 more to his tally.

Anthony Edwards fines, explained
Edwards has been fined seven times for a total of $370,000 during the 2024-25 NBA season and the 2025 NBA Playoffs. $200,000 worth of fines came during December.
Here is a breakdown of the times Edwards has been disciplined:
- Nov. 17:Â Edwards is fined $35,000 “for making an obscene gesture on the playing court.”
- Dec. 9:Â Edwards is fined $25,000 “for using profane language during a media interview.”
- Dec. 23:Â Edwards is fined $75,000 “for public criticism of officiating and using inappropriate and profane language” with media postgame.
- Dec. 29:Â Edwards is fined $100,000 “for using profane language during a live television interview.”
- Jan. 13: Edwards is fined $50,000 “for making obscene gestures toward a game official.”
- March 1: Edwards is fined $35,000 “for failing to leave the court in a timely manner following his ejection and throwing the game ball into the spectator stands.”
- April 22: Edwards is fined $50,000 “for directing inappropriate language and making an obscene gesture toward a fan.”
Edwards’ latest fine stems from an exchange with fans at Crypto.com Arena during Minnesota’s Game 1 victory over the Lakers to open the 2025 NBA Playoffs.
During a break in the action, a few fans heckled Edwards and his Timberwolves teammates sitting on the scorer’s table. Edwards first responded by bragging about Rudy Gobert’s finances, saying, “He’s got 200 million!” before Gobert corrected him to say, “He’s got 300 million!”
As Edwards prepared to walk back on the court, he told the fans, “My d— bigger than yours,” while grabbing his crotch, the language and gesture that earned him the $50,000 discipline.
In addition to the $335,000 in fines, Edwards missed out on one game check this season when he served an automatic suspension in late February for receiving his 16th technical foul of the regular season.
Edwards’ January fine was the result of a one-finger salute toward game officials in a loss to Minnesota on Jan. 11. The hefty fine before that stems from comments made during his walk-off interview after hitting a game-winning 3-pointer against the Rockets.
When asked about his heroics, Edwards said, “All I knew was, the play was for [Julius Randle] to go 14 — big-small pick-and-roll — once he picked it up, I mean, who else? I gotta go get it, s—.
“And [Nickeil Alexander-Walker] found me, [the defender] cut me off, I’m like, s— I’m going for the win. Like Gilbert Arenas said, I don’t do overtime, so f— it.”

While Edwards’ response was met with some nervous laughter from the Timberwolves’ broadcast team, the NBA offices did not take the answer lightly. Within the memo of Edwards’ latest fine, the league explains that the fine amount of $100,000 “is based in part on Edwards’ history of using profane language during media interviews.”
All three of Edwards’ fines in December were at least in part due to profanity.
After a win over the Warriors on Dec. 6, Edwards called defensive improvements from Randle and Naz Reid “f—ing incredible.” After a loss to the Warriors two weeks later, Edwards was fined for calling two members of the officiating crew “f—ing terrible,” among other criticisms that contained profane language.
