Yankees predicted to cut ties with 2024 first-round pick at deadline

Unfortunately, the New York Yankees have dealt with multiple injuries. This team will likely need to make one or two moves before the deadline to compete with the other top teams in Major League Baseball, and that could require them to trade some of their top prospects.

The idea of moving on from guys like Jasson Dominguez, Spencer Jones, and others could all be possible if the Yankees find an ace they truly love.

However, there could also be a scenario where the Yankees move on from their recent first-round draft pick in the 2024 MLB draft, Ben Hess.

Hess, a right-handed starter, has thrown the baseball at an above-average level during his short minor league career, posting a 0.93 ERA in his first two outings. In 9.2 innings, the Alabama product has struck out 18 hitters.

That should intrigue teams.

David Schoenfield of ESPN predicted that he could be the one the Yankees cut ties with at the deadline to find the type of player they’re looking for.

“No Gerrit Cole. Luis Gil is slowly on the mend from a lat strain. Carlos Carrasco and Marcus Stroman aren’t exactly getting the job done. The Yankees did just get Clarke Schmidt back, but they could certainly use a rotation upgrade. It’s hard to envision them trading top prospect George Lombard Jr., plus Spencer Jones’ stock has fallen, so let’s list a couple of pitchers here.

“Warren has had some big league time and would give the Marlins an MLB-ready starter. Hess was the Yankees’ first-round pick last year and perhaps has more upside but is further away from the majors,” Schoenfield wrote.

Keeping Hess around would ideally be what the Yankees do, as they’re clearly high on him after taking the Charleston High School product in the first round.

However, if the idea is to win right now, which it is, they’ll have to make some tough decisions. Hess could be one of them.
