Grizzlies’ Zach Edey does unthinkable act to ref, could warrant suspension

Zach Edey and the Memphis Grizzlies are headed to the playoffs, but it wasn’t easy to get there.

In the fourth quarter of the play-in game against the Dallas Mavericks, Edey was frustrated at a no-call and voiced his case to a referee.

When he yelled, the Memphis big man let out a glob of spit towards the referee and it drew some attention on social media.

Edey was awarded a technical foul for the interaction, but that could be attributed to what he was saying to the ref.

Watching the video, it’s hard to tell if Edey intentionally spat at the official, or if it was a biproduct of his boisterous protest.

The angle of the clip doesn’t show much, but it looks as if the big man puckers his lip mid-sentence to send the saliva forward. However, it could have just been excess moisture that was released while Edey was raising his voice.

If it was an intentional act, the league could fine or even suspend Edey.

Mavericks’ big man Anthony Davis was caught on camera chuckling after the former Purdue star was awarded the technical foul.

In the end, Edey got the last laugh. He ended with 15 points and 11 rebounds in a 120-106 victory that extends his team’s season. Now he just has to hope there’s no additional punishment for this saliva situation.
