NBA commissioner Adam Silver finally breaks silence on Luka Doncic-Anthony Davis blockbuster trade

It has been a long last two months for the Dallas Mavericks.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver has surely seen just about everything, but he finally had a chance to speak on the trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis in an interview with ESPN’s Pat McAfee.

“In terms of the trade itself, it’s obvious time will tell,” Silver said. “The only place where I feel defensive on behalf of the Dallas Mavericks and the new ownership there is there were some suggestions early on that the trade wasn’t done for basketball reasons, that somehow the new owner didn’t want to pay a maximum salary or was focused on building a real estate development or something else.”

Silver also shared that there are no plans for the Mavericks to move to Las Vegas despite the ownership group being based out of there. In fact, he revealed that the franchise is looking at building a new arena in Dallas.

Given that many fans and people around the game of basketball felt how lopsided the trade was, at least for the Mavericks, there’s been a lot of chatter that the NBA should’ve nixed the deal.

Then-commissioner David Stern vetoed a trade that would’ve sent Chris Paul to the Lakers in 2011, but he only had that ability since he was acting as part owner of the New Orleans Hornets, as Silver conveyed that “the commissioner doesn’t have the right to block a trade.”

Dallas general manager Nico Harrison firmly believes that defense wins championships. Davis is one of the best defenders in the league, but time will tell if he helps the Mavs win another ring.
