Man United vs. Lyon lineups, expected starting 11, confirmed team news, injuries: Onana to start, Zirkzee out

After a thrilling first leg in their Europa League quarterfinal matchup, Manchester United and Lyon clash once again on Thursday, this time at the famous Old Trafford.

The two sides played to a 2-2 draw last week in the first leg in France, with both sides striking late blows. Joshua Zirkzee scored an 88th-minute goal, which seemed like a winner, before Rayan Cherki struck back in the 95th minute to leave the aggregate scoreline even.

That leaves it all to play for across the final 90 minutes, with Ruben Amorim knowing that his season hinges on remaining alive in UEFA competition.

Both sides are playing for their European lives, with Man United stuck in the bottom half of the Premier League standings while Lyon are on the fringe of the Champions League places in the Ligue 1 standings.

The Sporting News runs through the latest team news and injury updates for both sides as the match draws nearer.

Man United vs. Lyon lineups, predicted starting 11, team news

Manchester United got word over the weekend that they would be without Joshua Zirkzee for the rest of the season after the forward fell victim to a hamstring injury over the weekend against Newcastle. They are also down Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo for the remainder of the campaign.

While Altay Bayinder started in goal on Saturday after Andre Onana‘s error-filled Europa nightmare, Ruben Amorim confirmed Onana would regain his place for this match.

Kobbie Mainoo has returned from injury with two substitute appearances and could be in line for a return to the starting XI, while Casemiro could also return after being left on the bench against Newcastle. Matthijs de Ligt is out for at least a few more months, as Amorim confirmed he is managing pain in his ankle.

Man United predicted XI (3-4-3, right to left): Onana (GK) — Mazraoui, Maguire, Yoro — Dalot, Ugarte, Casemiro, Dorgu — Garnacho, Hojlund, Fernandes.

Injured: Diallo (ankle), L. Martinez (ACL), Zirkzee (hamstring), de Ligt (ankle), Evans (knock, doubt), Collyer (knock).
Suspended: None.

Lyon manager Paolo Fonseca will have his full squad available for selection as they are not under any fitness pressure at the moment.

The only concern is prolific forward Georges Mikautadze, who was withdrawn late in their weekend win over Auxerre with a knock, but he seems to be ready to go. He should start over Alexandre Lacazette up front if fully fit, with the Frenchman used more in league play.

The key to Lyon’s lineup is Rayan Cherki who is a passing wizard and scored the late equalizer in the first leg against Man United.

Lyon predicted XI (4-3-3, right to left): Perri (GK) — Maitland-Niles, Mata, Niakhate, Tagliafico — Veretout, Akouokou, Tolisso — Cherki, Mikautadze, Almada.

Injured: Nuamah (ACL).
Suspended: None.
