49ers loosely linked to Dolphins’ 7-time Pro Bowler in potential blockbuster trade

It’s been an offseason of departures for the San Francisco 49ers. Could there still be one big arrival forthcoming?

When free agency began, the floodgates opened. San Francisco lost big names such as Dre Greenlaw, Charvarius Ward, Talanoa Hufanga, and Aaron Banks, and that came after the team had already traded former All-Pro wideout Deebo Samuel.

Ward’s departure leaves a gaping hole at cornerback opposite Deommodore Lenoir. The 49ers haven’t been in much of a spending mood so far this offseason, but would they make an exception for a superstar corner on an expiring contract?

The Miami Dolphins are currently shopping seven-time Pro Bowler Jalen Ramsey, as confirmed by general manager Chris Grier on Tuesday. The 30-year-old is owed $21.1 million in the final season of his current three-year deal.

On Wednesday, Gordon McGuinness of Pro Football Focus listed the 49ers as one of five potential trade fits for the nine-year veteran.

“The 49ers currently rank fifth in available cap space and have a clear need at cornerback, making them a logical candidate for a move like this. However, with the recent trade of Deebo Samuel… it’s fair to question whether San Francisco is leaning toward reloading rather than going all-in,” McGuinness wrote.

“Given that the 49ers have frequently been mocked cornerbacks in the top three rounds of the 2025 NFL draft, parting ways with one of those picks to land Ramsey could be just the move to make as they look to get back to winning ways in the NFC West in 2025.”

Ramsey totaled two interceptions and 11 passes defended last season, allowing an 83.2 passer rating in coverage. He’s never allowed a passer rating of 90 or above in a single season, and if the trade happened, the 49ers would prefer he didn’t start anytime soon.

The Dolphins don’t have a lot of leverage right now, but Ramsey is still a premier player, so it would take a middle-round draft selection to pry him loose despite his high salary.
