If anyone can talk about what it takes to be successful, it’s Serena Williams.
Considerably known as the world’s greatest female tennis player of all time, Williams, 43, is opening up about the price she paid to be a girl boss.
In an April 11 interview with “People”, the tennis legend said success is “very expensive.”
“I’m here [in California] without my kids, and that’s a big cost for me because I spend a lot of time with my children, and they’re very attached to me, which a part of me loves. So, it’s always some cost,” Williams said, attending the WYN Beauty x Shopify pop-up event in Los Angeles.
“My whole life I’ve had to kind of weigh, like, ‘If I wanna win a championship, well what is that going to cost me?’ ” Williams said.
“It’s going to cost me time with my family, it’s going to cost me friends, it’s going to cost me relationships. And they’re very expensive. You have to decide if it’s worth it for you,” she added.
Serena Williams talked about the challenges of being a mother
Williams is a mother to two daughters, Alexis Olympia, 7, and Adira River, 1, whom she shares with husband Alexis Ohanian.
The couple married in November 2017.
In a post shared to X on April 9, the former tennis star talked about the challenges she faced as a working mother.
“Far too often being a mom is a thankless full time job, with no time or energy left to care for yourself or move at the end of the day. I’m gonna thank my mom tomorrow for all she did for me -the things seen and unseen. #tired #exhausted #mom,” she wrote.
Williams dominated the tennis scene before her retirement in 2022.
Before hanging up her racket, she won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, and 14 Grand Slam doubles titles.
