Saints have real chance of signing Aaron Rodgers as free agent quarterback

The New Orleans Saints didn’t seem to need a quarterback a week ago.

Now? Derek Carr is facing a significant throwing shoulder injury, and the Saints are back in the market.

Still available is Aaron Rodgers, who seemed a foregone conclusion to join the Pittsburgh Steelers but now may have another option available in New Orleans.

CBS Sports analyst Cody Benjamin thinks Rodgers could really end up with the Saints.

Here’s why:

“Here’s the greatest rub, for both Rodgers and the Saints: Unlike the Steelers, the Saints do not play in the AFC North, which includes a pair of justified Super Bowl aspirants in the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals,” Benjamin writes. “They play in the NFC South, which over the last three seasons has crowned a champion with these final records: 8-9, 9-8, 10-7.”

There’s definitely a case to be made there.

The Saints have talent on offense with Chris Olave and Alvin Kamara. They also have an offensive-minded new head coach, Kellen Moore.

The Steelers are perennial winners, though, so it  might not be that straightforward.

It’s also not perfectly clear whether the Saints even want Rodgers.

But if they do, he could have a real choice on his hands.
