Giants’ Wilmer Flores basically is Barry Bonds

Is that Wilmer Flores or Barry Bonds?

That’s not a question San Francisco Giants fans expected to be asking themselves.

Of course, Flores and Bonds look nothing alike, so that’s not what we’re talking about.

But at the plate, Flores is currently doing his best Bonds impression.

The 33-year old homered six times in the Giants’ first 14 games. The only other San Francisco player to do that this century is Bonds, who actually did it in four out of the five seasons from 2000-2004.

Flores is also the fastest Giants player to 19 RBI since Bonds reached that mark at this pace in 2004.

It might be stating the obvious, but Flores has never before been like Bonds.

He had a promising start to his career with the Mets, stuck around New York for a while, then came to San Francisco, where he’s a solid yet unremarkable player.

But his start to this season has been absolutely incredible.

It’s one of the beautiful things about baseball, that players can go on stretches where they all of a sudden resemble one of the great legends in the history of the sport.

Flores is a fan and clubhouse favorite, which is great but isn’t necessarily the key to winning baseball games.

But when Flores can be those things and be in the midst of an absurd hot streak, then it’s really hard to lose. The vibes, both tangibly and intangibly, are just too good for the Giants and Flores right now.
