Mariners trade idea would change outlook of AL West by acquiring Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

The Seattle Mariners have been searching for a player to help change the outlook of their offense. They have plenty of pitchers, but need a superstar at the plate.

The Toronto Blue Jays have been working to extend Vladimir Guerrero Jr. However, Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller noted that if the season slips away, they could trade Guerrero to the highest bidder. Miller noted that the Mariners could be that team.

“If they have even a little bit of a playoff pulse in late July, they won’t be trading away Guerrero,” wrote Miller. “(Nor fellow impending free agents Bo Bichette, Chris Bassitt, Max Scherzer and Chad Green.) Should they crash and burn, though, they might wave the white flag like the Baltimore Orioles did with Manny Machado in 2018, shipping Guerrero to the highest bidder. (Early guess at who that bidder would be: Seattle Mariners.)”

Signs point to Guerrero and the Blue Jays coming to an agreement. However, if he is floated at the trade deadline, the Mariners could part ways with one of their starting pitchers, along with prospects, to land him.

Last season the Mariners scored the 10th least runs in the league. This season, they have scored just 18 runs in seven games. Adding Guerrero could give their offense a jolt. Last season, the Mariners choked away the American League West. Adding Guerrero could prevent a repeat.

The Mariners would not be considered favorites to re-sign him in free agency. However, including Luis Castillo in a trade could free them up financially to pursue other stars next winter.
