Major League Baseball is back in style, with the Dodgers and Cubs clashing in the Tokyo Series to open the 2025 season.
Shohei Ohtani leads Los Angeles in its title defense, on the heels of a domineering World Series championship last season. Ohtani — the defending National League MVP — already electrified the Tokyo Dome crowd over the weekend, smashing a towering home run in an exhibition game.
The Dodgers, touting a rotation full of aces, will start Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Roki Sasaki — two prized Japanese right-handers — in Games 1 and 2. Sasaki, the uber-talented 23-year-old, made a strong first impression in spring training with a devilish splitter as he preps for his MLB debut.
While much of the hoopla may revolve around the Dodgers, the Cubs are no pushover. Chicago added start outfielder Kyle Tucker in the offseason and returns a strong nucleus of talent, including Japanese southpaw Shota Imanaga, who will oppose Yamamoto in Game 1.
The 2025 Tokyo Series marks MLB’s first trip to Japan since 2019, when the Mariners and Athletics opened the season.
