The Toronto Blue Jays are entering the 2025 season hoping to bounce back after a dreadful finish to 2024.
After reaching the postseason three times in a four-year span, Toronto fell to last place in the American League East, finishing with a record of 74-88.
This past offseason, they made some big moves, trading for Andres Gimenez while also signing Max Scherzer, Anthony Santander and Jeff Hoffman.
But if they want to remain a perennial postseason contender, they could certainly use more help. On Friday, Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer listed them as a possible fit for right-hander Sandy Alcantara, who will likely be traded at some point this year.
“The Blue Jays are also full-up with starting pitching, but this sure looks like an all-in year. In addition to Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, Chris Bassitt and Max Scherzer are also slated for free agency after 2025,” Rymer wrote.
The Blue Jays do have a lot of players entering the final year of their contracts, so it would make sense to add a pitcher with multiple years of team control.
Alcantara is under contract through at least 2026 and has a club option for 2027. Plus, Scherzer is already dealing with a thumb injury this spring, and he could be out for some time.
In that case, the Blue Jays would be very smart to try and add a top-level starter such as Alcantara.
Their farm system is a little thin, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt to bring in a pitcher of Alcantara’s caliber. He won the National League Cy Young award in 2022 and is a two-time All-Star.
We’ll see what Toronto decides to do as the season progresses.
