There’s never been a more prolific bench shooting season than the one Payton Pritchard is having right now for the Boston Celtics.
Pritchard drilled his 219th 3-pointer off the bench on Saturday night, setting a new NBA record.
The 6-foot-1 guard from Oregon is shooting a career-best 41.5 percent from 3 on the season, helping fuel his record. He’s doing that on remarkable volume for a reserve, chucking up 7.8 3-point attempts per night.
Pritchard broke the record previously held by Wayne Ellington, who knocked down 218 from beyond the arc off the Miami Heat bench in 2017-18.

The diminutive guard is just one of many on these Celtics, who are on pace to shatter the NBA record for 3-point attempts per game by putting up more than 50 a night. They’ll also likely break the record for most 3-pointers made by a team in a season.
Pritchard’s 7.8 long-distance attempts per game rank 19th in the NBA. His rate of 3.3 made 3s per game ranks 10th.
It’s been quite the shooting rise for Pritchard, who has raised his 3-point attempts per game by more than three a night this season. He never even attempted this many 3s per night in college, when he was Oregon’s top perimeter player.
And now, with 14 games still to play, Pritchard has a chance to establish a new record every night.
