Prior to this year’s NBA trade deadline, the Minnesota Timberwolves were rumored to be one of the most active teams. Instead, they decided to keep their current roster together.
This doesn’t mean they didn’t attempt to make any trades. Mike Scotto of HoopsHype reported that the Timberwolves tried to trade both forward Julius Randle and guard Donte DiVincenzo in a potential acquisition for Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant.
“The Timberwolves aggressively pursued Durant in trade talks before the deadline and are expected to circle the wagon again this summer, but were unwilling to part with star guard Anthony Edwards and versatile forward Jaden McDaniels in discussions. Instead, Timberwolves forward Julius Randle and guard Donte DiVincenzo were discussed as part of trade talks for Durant,” Scotto wrote.
Surprisingly, the Suns were more interested in entertaining a deal for Minnesota sixth-man center Naz Reid, according to HoopsHype. Reid has put together another sixth-man worthy season, averaging 14.8 points and 6.1 rebounds off the bench. As a 25-year-old center, Reid makes more sense for any opposing team needing a starting center.
It ended up being a blessing in disguise, at least for the moment for Minnesota. Since Randle has returned to the lineup from injury, the Timberwolves are undefeated at 11-0. Since returning, he’s put together some strong performances against the Suns, Charlotte Hornets, and the Denver Nuggets. The standout game was against the Nuggets where he scored 25 points in the Wolves’ victory.
What is being slightly overlooked is DiVincenzo has been playing well too. He also had impressive performances against the Suns and Hornets. Thus far in March, he’s averaging 15.7 points, shooting 52% from the field, and 52% from three-point range.
This offseason, Minnesota could revisit some trade talks if this postseason doesn’t go well. As of right now, they made the right decision by keeping their current team together. They’re thriving at the right time.
