NBA Insider calls bluff on Mavericks’ interest in acquiring 2-time NBA champion from struggling West team

The Dallas Mavericks are one of the potential suitors for Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant, who seems to be done with his current team. However, NBA analysts think this landing spot is pretty unlikely.

NBA Analyst Marc Stein wrote on his SubStack, the Stein Line, that he thinks the Mavs interest in the 36-year-old is overstated.

“Dallas has been repeatedly described as a potential Durant suitor, before the deadline and since, but I continue to hear that reports of its interest have been overstated,” Stein wrote. “The Mavericks, based on my best read, are not currently planning for a three-star construction. Securing Irving’s future as their backcourt anchor after stunningly surrendering Luka is a priority — Irving holds a $44 million player option for next season — and it is likewise obvious that Dallas would have to gut its depth to make a competitive trade offer for Durant.”

Considering the Mavericks are in a “win-now” mindset, getting Durant would be a perfect step in that direction. However, since they got almost nothing in return for trading Luka Doncic, they don’t have the assets to give up for Durant, and would have to trade depth, which is not a good idea.

Durant also might not want to go to Dallas, as he might be able to see the writing on the wall that Dallas is going downhill. With that in mind, it might not be in his best interest to go there.

However, if the Mavericks can work some type of deal where they can give up the minimum for Durant, they should do it. He is a winner, has championship experience, and paired with Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis, they could have a contender in Dallas, as long as they have depth around their stars.
