Red Sox predicted to land $5 million ex-Rangers reliever to boost bullpen

The Boston Red Sox were very aggressive this past offseason, signing Alex Bregman, Walker Buehler and Aroldis Chapman while also trading for Garrett Crochet.

They may now be the favorites in the American League East with the New York Yankees having been hit hard by injuries early on.

The Red Sox have a solid club in place, but could still benefit from another move or two to strengthen their ballclub. It wouldn’t hurt for them to add a back-end reliever who could potentially close.

Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report predicts that they will ultimately be the ones to sign right-hander David Robertson.

“Robertson, meanwhile, had a 3.00 ERA and fanned 12.4 batters per nine innings as a 39-year-old for the Texas Rangers in 2024. It’s a surprise that nobody has snapped him up yet, though the stalemate surely won’t last forever,” Rymer wrote.

Robertson was solid with the Rangers in 2024. He’s a former All-Star and even won a World Series title with the Yankees back in 2009.

For now, Boston has some intriguing options for the ninth inning, those being Chapman and Liam Hendriks. However, it wouldn’t hurt for them to add just one more arm at the back end of their bullpen.

For his career, the veteran reliever owns a 2.91 ERA and 177 saves. Thanks to his time with the Yankees, he’s familiar with the AL East and the environment of Fenway Park, so it shouldn’t be too big of an adjustment for him should he sign in Boston.

It will certainly be interesting to see where he ends up. Plenty of teams could use bullpen help.
