Why did Seahawks trade DK Metcalf? Seattle ships star wide receiver to Pittsburgh

Just days after the Seattle Seahawks traded quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders, the team made another blockbuster trade involving star wide receiver, DK Metcalf.

Per reports, the deal sees Metcalf sent to the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are sending back a 2025 second-round draft pick. In addition, the two teams are swapping sixth- and seventh-round selections, with Seattle taking the lower one.

The Steelers have been in the market for a wide receiver since last season, so this trade is huge for them. Meanwhile, the Seahawks now have a major need at wide receiver, as the team also cut Tyler Lockett recently.

So, why would the Seahawks trade a 27-year-old star wide receiver? Let’s take a closer look.

Why did Seahawks trade DK Metcalf?

If you’ve been following the news recently, this trade comes as no surprise. We knew days ago that Metcalf had requested to be traded from Seattle and it was simply a matter of time before the Seahawks obliged.

Even if the Seahawks held off on trading Metcalf and he stayed in 2025, there was no guarantee he would be back in 2026, as Metcalf was entering the final year of his deal. That was likely the driving force behind the decision.

The funny thing is, the Steelers don’t check most of the boxes Metcalf was looking for in his new home. According to reports, Metcalf wanted to land somewhere that had warm weather and a stable quarterback situation.

Well, the Steelers don’t have either of those things, but maybe Metcalf knows something we don’t about an impending quarterback move in Pittsburgh.

But none of that matters to Seahawks fans, who have seen two big names removed from the offense. For a team that once looked like it would give it another go and try to compete in 2025, Seattle now looks headed for a rebuild.
