After restructuring contracts with Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb to clear up $56.6 million in cap room this year, the Dallas Cowboys seemed ready for action in free agency.
Executive vice president Stephen Jones said last week that the Cowboys would be “selectively aggressive” in free agency following a disappointing 7-10 season.
Not so fast, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told CBS Sports and other outlets on Wednesday.
“I don’t think aggressive is the right word,” the elder Jones said. “I wouldn’t call us void in any area, void if you include what we’re going to do in the draft… I’m not looking at free agency as a place to fill voids.”
NFL Network analyst Kyle Brandt grilled Cowboys ownership on Thursday morning, calling Jerry Jones out for only signing one Pro Bowl free agent (a punter) in the past 15 years.

“The Cowboys are this elderly person in your life,” Brandt said. “They are terrified to spend any money and they don’t even want to go out and buy a sandwich, let alone go on a vacation. You’re like, ‘You’ve saved your whole life. We checked the finances. You’re good. You’re comfortable.’ And they’re like, ‘No, I think I should just stay here and sit on my couch and watch reruns.’
“You can’t take it with you, Jerry.”
For more than a decade now, Jones and the Cowboys have avoided making a huge splash in free agency. And from 2021 to 2023, that strategy worked for the organization as they finished 12-5 for three consecutive seasons.
But after doing nothing in free agency last year and missing the playoffs, the pressure is mounting for Dallas to make some big moves.
