Chiefs inform veteran wide receiver of intent to part ways

With National Football League free agency just over a week away, the Kansas City Chiefs face some tough financial decisions.

The Chiefs had a great season, but ultimately lost in the Super Bowl to the Philadelphia Eagles. Unfortunately, Kansas City does not have a lot of cap space flexibility to make many major changes this offseason, with recently franchise tagging offensive lineman Trey Smith, who will make $23.4 million on the tag next season.

The Chiefs’ big issue is that they are currently over the cap. With multiple veteran wide receivers set to hit free agency, Kansas City appears ready to move on from one of them.

Kansas City has expressed its intent to move on from veteran receiver Justin Watson due to cap space issues, according to Sportskeeda NFL insider Tony Pauline.

“The Kansas City Chiefs are moving towards salary-cap hell and have some hard choices to make,” Pauline wrote. “I’m told they’d like to bring receiver Justin Watson back, but they informed his agent they do not have the money to do so.”

Watson spent the last three seasons with the Chiefs, winning two Super Bowls after winning one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The 29-year-old receiver played his best football with Kansas City, but still has yet to amass more than 460 receiving yards in a season.

Though Watson consistently played for the Chiefs, appearing in 50 regular-season games across the last three seasons, his usage plummeted during the playoffs this season. With their limited cap space and multiple receivers slated to hit free agency, it’s unlikely the Chiefs will retain Watson.
