Russell Wilson heavily linked to dysfunctional NFC team by NFL insider

Russell Wilson’s future with the Pittsburgh Steelers has never been more uncertain, as the veteran quarterback is set to hit unrestricted free agency, and according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the team is leaning towards keeping Justin Fields over him.

“The sense I get is that Justin Fields has an edge over Russell Wilson in Pittsburgh’s free agent quarterback pecking order. There is sentiment for Fields in the building, and both sides would be open to a return. The Steelers have at least another week to crystallize those plans, and they certainly haven’t ruled out Wilson at this point,” Fowler wrote.

Wilson will have a few teams vying for his services if the Steelers decide to let him walk, and according to SNY’s Connor Hughes, the New York Giants seem to be a legitimate landing spot for the ten-time Pro Bowler signal-caller.

“Russell Wilson (Steelers) is also someone whom the Giants have discussed. One league source believed him to be the player the Giants ultimately land,” Hughes wrote.

In a tweet on Sunday, Hughes also said that New York is focused on acquiring the No.1 pick from the Tennessee Titans and wants to pair a rookie with an experienced veteran in the quarterback room. Hughes added that a few people he spoke with believe Wilson landing with the Giants is more likely than the team landing other potential free-agent quarterback options, including Aaron Rodgers and Sam Darnold.

“The Giants took their big swing on Matt Stafford. That failed. Now multiple sources expect them to concentrate their efforts on getting the No. 1 pick from Tennessee, and pairing the QB they select with a veteran,” Hughes tweeted.

“That could be Aaron Rodgers, but I’m told the former Packers/Jets QB is more of a “discussion” at this point than immediate Stafford fallback. Russell Wilson, Sam Darnold are two others the Giants are discussing, per sources. A couple people I talked to believed Wilson to be the most likely outcome,” Hughes added in his tweet.

Wilson would be a nice signing by New York, as the 36-year-old had success with the Steelers in 2024 and showed that he can still play efficient football and win games. Additionally, he would be an excellent mentor for the Giants’ potential rookie signal-caller.
