The Brooklyn Nets are the No. 11 seed in the Eastern Conference and have no chance of making noise in the postseason.
This is understandable as the Nets parted with many of their established contributors at the trade deadline in hopes of kickstarting their rebuild. However, their best player, Cameron Johnson, was not dealt. If the failed Big Three eras in Brooklyn proved anything, it’s that their front office loves fast-tracking to championship contention.
Brooklyn could believe the third time will be the charm and make a bold move for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason. Bleacher Report predicts the Nets will do exactly that, explaining the thought process behind the hypothetical blockbuster.
“As busy as Brooklyn was at the start of trade season, its decision to keep quiet at the deadline could be revealing,” B/R’s Zach Buckley wrote. “Even if the Nets falter down the stretch, it doesn’t sound like they plan on being down for long.”
“They have designs on “going star searching” this summer and kept swingman Cameron Johnson because they view him “either as a very good fit as a role player next to a star or an attractive player to use in a trade to get that star,” according to Brian Windhorst of ESPN,” Buckley concluded.
A forward duo of Johnson and Antetokounmpo could act as the foundation of a title contender, but the Nets would need to add many more proven contributors to satisfy the Bucks superstar. His top priority is hoisting the Larry O’Brien Trophy once again, so he’ll only ask out and be happy to land in Brooklyn if the right pieces are in place.
