The Houston Rockets were expected to make some noise in the Western Conference this season, but few anticipated the team to be 13 games above .500.
While they’ve slowed in recent months, the emergence of forward Amen Thompson and the rest of their young core gaining experience is largely the reason for being the No. 5 seed in the loaded West. Still, the Rockets lack the superstar many other championship contenders have, such as Denver Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic or Oklahoma City Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
To fix this, Houston’s front office may explore a blockbuster trade for an ex-Thunder superstar this offseason. There are strong rumblings the Phoenix Suns will cut ties with Kevin Durant this summer, which is why Fadeaway World predicts the Rockets will acquire him.
“At nearly 37 years old, Durant knows his championship window is closing fast, and the Suns’ lack of depth and poor roster construction doesn’t give him the best shot at another ring,” Fadeaway World’s Eddie Bitar wrote. “With Devin Booker and Bradley Beal both struggling to fit alongside him, the Suns might have no choice but to explore a full reset in the summer.”
“If that happens, expect a bidding war for one of the greatest scorers in NBA history, with Miami, Houston, and even Golden State waiting to pounce,” Bitar concluded.
As Bitar noted, Durant is one of the most prolific scorers in league history, making him the perfect fit alongside Thompson. The biggest hole in the 22-year-old’s game is creating his own shot, which Durant could greatly help him develop over time.
Not to mention, adding a two-time veteran NBA champion to an incredibly promising roster is a recipe for success.
