Magic could steal Lakers’ top center target to boost title hopes via offseason signing

The Orlando Magic have had a disappointing season thus far and they may look to make a major splash in free agency in the offseason.

After being the surprise team in the NBA last season after they secured the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference standings, the Magic were expected to be even better this season. Instead, they have seen their star duo of Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner miss time due to injury, which has hurt their title chances this season.

Orlando currently finds themselves sitting seventh in the East standings with a 29-30 record. This is a major downgrade from last season where they won 47 games. The Magic also sit three and a half games behind the Detroit Pistons for the sixth seed.

With the Magic struggling this season, it is clear that they are not a championship contender just yet. Because of this, they may look to upgrade their roster in the offseason around Banchero and Wagner.

One player they could target in free agency in the offseason is Myles Turner. Turner and the Indiana Pacers have yet to agree on a contract extension, and it is likely that he will enter unrestricted free agency in the summer.

Of course, the Los Angeles Lakers are going to be a major threat to sign Turner, especially with them pursuing him for the last few seasons, but the Magic could also show interest. Orlando currently lacks frontcourt depth and Turner would fit in perfectly as their new starting center, replacing Wendell Carter Jr. in that role.

Turner is a great scorer and rebounder who would give the Magic a much better option at center. The 28-year-old would also provide the team with a much-needed outside shooter and would give them another great defender in their starting lineup.

While Turner would be a great fit in Orlando, there should be many teams looking to sign him in the offseason. It will also depend on if the Magic are willing to offer Turner the contract that he wants. If they are able to land him, Orlando would better their title odds for next season, especially with Banchero and Wagner still developing.
