The New York Yankees have been rumored to be in the market for an infielder, but nothing has materialized. MLB insider Jon Heyman revealed the reason that they will likely not add one.
During an appearance on The Baseball Insiders Heyman was asked by Robert Murray what the likelihood of the Yankees adding an infielder was before opening day.
“Yeah, I don’t see it,” said Heyman. “The Yankees, I don’t think they’re adding anybody. I’m told they have no money.”
Heyman’s comments are on par with owner Hal Steinbrenner saying he does not think the team needs an exorbitant payroll to win a World Series.
“The concern to me is … should I really need a $300-plus million payroll to win a championship? Does having a huge payroll really increase my chances that much of winning a championship? I’m not sure there’s a strong correlation there,” Steinbrenner said according to the New York Post.
The Yankees lost Juan Soto to a 15-year, $765 million deal with the New York Mets. They used the money they did not spend on Soto to add Cody Bellinger, Max Fried, Devin Williams and Paul Goldschmidt. However, they did not add anyone who can play second base or in the hot corner.
As of right now, the Yankees will use DJ LeMahieu and Oswaldo Cabrera at third base with Jazz Chisholm Jr. slotted in at second base. LeMahieu had a .204 batting average last season while Cabrera had a .247 average. Both players do not seem like everyday players at this point. Unfortunately, if Heyman’s comments are true, the Yankees will have no choice but to hope for bounce-back seasons from those two.
