Friday’s spring training opener offers the Rays a sneak peak at their home for the 2025 season, as they take on the Yankees.
In October, Hurricane Milton shredded the roof at Tropicana Field, forcing Tampa Bay to find a new, temporary home. In November, the franchise announced that it will relocate its home games for the 2025 season to George M. Steinbrenner Field, which doubles as the Yankees’ spring training stadium and the home of their Single-A affiliate, the Tampa Tarpons.
The Rays will play two games at Steinbrenner Field in spring training, with the second game coming in their penultimate spring training game on March 23. Their atypical regular season home opener is slated for March 28 against the Rockies.
Friday’s game also carries extra intrigue for the Yankees, who will hand the ball to veteran right-hander Marcus Stroman. Last week, Stroman maintained that he’s a starting pitcher and will not pitch in the bullpen, creating headlines.
While New York has a strong rotation — including offseason acquisition Max Fried — Stroman will have a chance to prove his worth, beginning in earnest against Tampa Bay.
