Mets named ‘landing spot’ for Blue Jays 4-time All-Star, blockbuster trade candidate

The 2025 season is critical for the New York Mets on so many levels.

It’s Juan Soto’s first season in Queens. It could very well be Pete Alonso’s last. And with the National League as a whole and the East division more competitive than ever before, the Mets will have to scratch and claw for every win.

Even with Soto, Alonso, and Francisco Lindor in the lineup, the Mets will have a tough task keeping up with other contenders in terms of offensive firepower. Could that put them in play for a blockbuster deadline trade?

The Mets were known to have checked in on Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. before Alonso re-signed, according to a report from SNY’s Andy Martino in January. Could they still revisit the possibility ahead of Guerrero’s impending free agency?

Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer thinks so. Rymer named Guerrero as one of the top 10 “most likely” trade candidates of the 2025 season on Friday, while linking the Mets to the four-time All-Star as a potential fit.

“Guerrero is the kind of guy who could entirely change a franchise’s sight lines. Even a middling contender could put its eye on the World Series with him aboard for October,” Rymer wrote.

Potential Landing Spots: New York Mets, San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers.”

Guerrero, who had the sixth-best OPS in MLB last season at .940, is only 25 years old, and could be set to make $500 million-plus when he hits the open market. He wasn’t able to reach an extension with the Blue Jays, who finished in last place in the American League East last season.

Needless to say, the Mets will be watching the Blue Jays very closely in 2025. Even if they’re not going to sign Guerrero when he hits the open market, he could be the ultimate rental for a New York team that has a surprisingly deep farm system heading into the year.
