Tottenham vs. Man United live score: Premier League result, updates, stats as Spurs host Red Devils

Tottenham host Manchester United in a Premier League clash on Sunday that neither team dare lose amid their respectively poor seasons.

United began this weekend in 13th place in the table, one place and two points ahead of Spurs. The fact they are closer to the relegation zone than the top four underlines the miserable league seasons they are enduring, and defeat for either side here would only add pressure to coaches Ange Postecoglou and Ruben Amorim.

Spurs beat the Red Devils 4-3 in a Carabao Cup fixture here back in December, but that was one of just three home wins in 11 games in all competitions. The visitors are unbeaten in four away matches in league and cup play, but not including the penalty-shootout win at Arsenal in the FA Cup third round, they have only won five games on their travels all season.

Tottenham vs. Man United live updates, highlights, and commentary

39 mins: The game has drifted a little here. Amorim looks deeply frustrated on the touchline, though.

33 mins: United have had more shots than Spurs up to this point, but they’ve only had 31 percent of the possession. They’ve got to do more to get the ball and keep it. Spurs are too comfortable.

27 mins: Big save from Onana! Maddison plays a great ball out wide to Son, who cuts it back for Tel. His first-time shot is beaten away at the near post by United’s keeper.

23 mins: GARNACHO HAS TO SCORE! United work the ball well and Fernandes finds the Argentinian in acres of space in the box. He has time to take a touch and set himself, but he blazes the finish over the bar. Amorim was furious with that miss.

22 mins: Close from Joshua Zirkzee! A good turn and shot on the edge of the Spurs box sees the ball fly narrowly wide of Vicario’s left-hand post.

19 mins: United enjoy some good possession in the Spurs half, but it doesn’t get them anywhere. At the other end, Maguire makes a good block as Dejan Kulusevski shoots from the edge of the box.

16 mins: Spurs have dropped more points from winning positions (21) than any other Premier League team this season. United have gained 10 from a losing position. You have to think this one is far from over…

13 mins: GOAL! TOTTENHAM LEAD! Just after United fail to take their chance, Spurs do just that. Lucas Bergvall’s shot is saved by Andre Onana, but he can only push the ball to James Maddison, who couldn’t miss from a yard out. United’s defence was completely static.

10 mins: United should be ahead! Rasmus Hojlund gets away from Ben Davies to reach Harry Maguire’s long ball, cuts onto his left foot, and shoots straight at Vicario. United work the loose ball to Alejandro Garnacho, who tries to bend one into the top corner but is denied by the keeper, and Diogo Dalot’s rebound is hooked clear by Ben Davies. Amorim will feel one of those chances should have ended up in the net.

6 mins: Spurs have started the brighter with the ball, but there have been no chances yet. United seem reasonably happy to let the visitors have possession away from the final third.

Kickoff: First half

Spurs get us off and running at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It looks like Dorgu is starting on the left this time for United, with Dalot on the right, reversing the roles they had against Leicester City last week.

3 mins before kickoff: Here come the teams! Anyone able to call this one? I’ve got no idea.

22 mins before kickoff: Ange Postecoglou, meanwhile, is feeling a lot better about the state of his squad. “Having them [senior players back] in training is the big thing. We have hardly trained over the past two and a half months, it’s mostly been recovery,” he said to Sky Sports.

“But training this week has been outstanding. A few have been out for a while, it will take them some time to get fully up to speed, but particularly having Guglielmo Vicario and James Maddison back — not just as the players they are, but who they are as well.

“We want to play high-tempo, high-energy football. For the first time in a long time we have good options off the bench [to help us do that].”

45 mins before kickoff:  Amorim is hoping that United’s latest injury crisis might actually work out in a positive way, with the youngsters on the bench — who don’t have a single minute of football for the senior team between them — perhaps able to embrace this game with minimal pressure.

Asked if he felt as though the world were against him at the moment, he told Sky Sports: “I don’t see it like that. There are seasons when everything happens at the same time. Maybe we will find new ways to create situations.

“We have kids with less responsibility, less weight on their shoulders. They are good players. If needed, we will put the kids [in] to play and maybe we will find good things in this moment.

“It is a very good moment in their lives, no matter the moment of our club. We are ready to try to win this game. We want to win this game; we need to win this game. Whatever happens in the end, it is my responsibility.”

50 mins before kickoff: United’s bench today features just one senior player in Victor Lindelof, who has only played 59 minutes in the Premier League all season. The rest are academy graduates with barely any experience playing or training with the first team. That said, there is plenty of excitement about the futures of these youngsters, particularly striker Chido Obi.

1 hour 10 mins before kickoff: The teams are in! Guglielmo Vicario and James Maddison return from injury for Spurs, while Mathys Tel starts in attack. For United, Casemiro lines up in midfield, and Patrick Dorgu makes his Premier League debut.

1 hour 30 mins before kickoff: We’ve seen this banner at recent Spurs games, and it’s formed part of a pre-match protest today. Fans are not happy with the way the club is being run.

1 hour 44 mins before kickoff: Spurs may not believe it given their injury problems this season, but they come into this game with a stronger-looking squad than their opponents, who have had a wretched week on the fitness front. Their midfield options were dealt big blows, and Amad Diallo’s ankle injury could have repercussions that go well beyond this fixture.

It means we could see a few new names in the United squad today, including young midfielder Sekou Kone, who only joined the Red Devils last August.

2 hours before kickoff: This is a meeting of two teams who simply dare not lose this game. The trouble is, losing games has been a persistent problem this season.

Tottenham vs. Man United lineups, team news

Tottenham have a trio of important players returning this weekend. Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, left-back Destiny Udogie, and midfielder James Maddison have all been passed fit for the game. Udogie is on the bench, but the other two start.

Postecoglou is being patient with the returns of Micky van de VenCristian Romero and Richarlison, so those three are not expected back until at least later this month. Timo Werner is also not quite ready, but Brennan Johnson is among the substitutes, as is Wilson Odobert.

Dominic Solanke is still sidelined, while Radu Dragusin is out for the season.

Tottenham starting XI (4-3-3, right to left): Vicario (GK) — Porro, Danso, Davies, Spence — Bergvall, Bentancur, Maddison — Kulusevski, Tel, Son

Tottenham subs: Kimsky, Udogie, Gray, Bissouma, Sarr, Moore, Odobert, Johnson, Scarlett

Things may be easing for Spurs on the injury front, but Amorim is suddenly facing a real problem in his own midfield.

The Athletic reported on Saturday that Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and Toby Collyer had all suffered injuries in training this week. That means Casemiro gets a rare start in central midfield today.

Things then got worse later that day with the news that Amad Diallo is facing several weeks out with ankle ligament damage, so he too is missing. Luke ShawLisandro Martinez and Mason Mount are long-term absentees.

Both Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund start in attack, largely out of necessity, with Amorim’s squad down to the bare bones. Indeed, the substitutes’ bench consists of the returning Victor Lindelof and a host of youngsters with barely any first-team experience between them.

Man United starting XI (3-4-2-1, right to left): Onana (GK) — De Ligt, Maguire, Mazraoui — Dorgu, Casemiro, Fernandes, Dalot — Zirkzee, Garnacho — Hojlund

Man United subs: Harrison, Amass, Fredricson, Heaven, Lindelof, J. Fletcher, Kone, Moorhouse, Obi
