Red Sox projected lineup 2025: How Alex Bregman fits in with Rafael Devers, Jarren Duran

The Red Sox added the last big free agent on the market, as Boston and Alex Bregman agreed to a three-year deal Wednesday night.

At first look, this fit seems a little strange, with Bregman and Rafael Devers having played the same position in their careers. But Bregman’s versatility and the short length of the contract shed some light into how Boston will use him moving forward.

Here’s a look at where the Red Sox lineup stands as spring training gets underway in Fort Meyers, Florida.

What position will Alex Bregman play?

Since Rafael Devers currently occupies third base for Boston, Bregman will likely to second base to begin the season, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports. In his career, Bregman has played 995 games at third base, 129 at short stop and just nine games at second base.

Bregman’s position may change as the season unfolds, however.

Boston’s Kristian Campbell remains one of the top prospects in baseball, and when he is ready for the majors, he is expected to play second base for the Red Sox. That will likely push Bregman to third, Devers to designated hitter and Yoshida, who has three years left on his deal, to the bench.

Additionally, teams have reportedly checked in on first baseman Triston Casas, so it is also possible Boston trades him and moves Devers to first base. For now, Bregman will slide to second base as Campbell gets more time in the minors.
