Astros predicted to sign Cardinals $13 million ex-All-Star to boost rotation

The Houston Astros have been trying to re-sign two-time All-Star Alex Bregman this offseason, but it appears a reunion is unlikely.

General manager Dana Brown even spoke of Bregman in the past tense and went as far as to say the Astros had already lost him.

However, other areas of the Astros’ roster need attention. They have four starters on the injured list entering the 2025 season and may need a veteran presence, especially after the loss of Justin Verlander.

Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter predicted that right-hander Kyle Gibson will be in Houston’s rotation come Opening Day.

“The Astros should have Luis García and Lance McCullers Jr. both back at some point during the first half of the season, so they could opt to go with newcomer Hayden Wesneski and prospect Colton Gordon battle for the No. 5 starter job this spring,” Reuter noted. “However, if veteran innings eater Kyle Gibson is available on a reasonable one-year contract, he could be the perfect stopgap to help keep those young arms from being overextended.”

Gibson spent the 2024 season with the St. Louis Cardinals, going 8-8 with a 4.24 ERA in 30 starts. He also pitched 169 2/3 innings and managed to stay off the injured list.

A contender such as Houston could use Gibson’s veteran presence as they prepare for the 2025 season. He could mentor some of their young arms and give them innings while they wait for injured starters Luis Garcia, Lance McCullers Jr., Cristian Javier and J.P. France to return.

They may be out on Bregman, but it makes sense to give their rotation some attention as the season approaches. We’ll see if they add Gibson to the mix.
