The Denver Broncos chose to keep three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster last season but Bo Nix took every snap as a rookie. It was thought that maybe one of the other quarterbacks — Jarrett Stidham or Zach Wilson — would be dealt before the trade deadline.
That did not happen but both quarterbacks are unrestricted free agents this offseason. The Broncos will likely look to bring one of them back as the primary backup to Nix in 2025, but the other could leave for a new opportunity. Wilson is the more attractive of the two in terms of potential upside as a former No.2 overall pick and Steve Bradshaw of TWSN believes that the Los Angeles Rams will be intrigued enough to sign him.
“I’m fully aware that Wilson is going to head to the bench once again, but this is a lot different. Nix is great, but he’s an unproven rookie with no prior NFL experience. Matthew Stafford, on the other hand, is a 37-year-old veteran with a Super Bowl win. Not to mention, offensive genius Sean McVay is running the ship”, said Bradshaw.
There are some good points there. Sean McVay works wonders with his quarterbacks and he may be just the coach to bring out whatever could be left of Wilson. Stafford isn’t going to play forever and a rested but still young Wilson could be the perfect bridge to the future in L.A.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton is definitely a fan of Wilson and believes in his future but Nix is the guy going forward in Denver and Wilson is aware of that. It shouldn’t take much to convince him to leave in free agency and a new contract with the Rams could get Wilson somewhat closer to the trajectory his career was once on.
Spotrac projects a potential contract for Wilson to average just $3.3 million annually, a small price to pay for a Rams team with Les Snead as its general manager and McVay as its head coach, two guys more than willing to take a shot on a player.
If the Broncos do lose Wilson, they may prioritize re-signing Stidham, who won’t have as much of a market.
