Liverpool vs. Tottenham live score: Carabao Cup result, updates, stats from semifinal second leg

With Newcastle United already confirmed into the EFL Cup final after stunning Arsenal yesterday, Liverpool and Tottenham battle for the other slot at Wembley as they meet in the second leg of their semifinal matchup.

Spurs lead 1-0 on aggregate after Lucas Bergvall’s 85th-minute winner a month ago gave Ange Postecoglou’s side the early advantage, but the task remains tall as they look to protect the lead on the road at the home of the Premier League and UEFA Champions League leaders.

Liverpool generated 23 shots in the first leg but couldn’t beat then-debutant Antonin Kinsky in goal, and they’ll give it another go in front of the home crowd as they seek their third trip to Wembley in the last four years.

Tottenham, on the other hand, are aiming for their first EFL Cup title since 2008.

Liverpool vs. Tottenham live updates, highlights from Carabao Cup semifinal

2 hours to kickoff: Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has made a massive call ahead of this match, and one that has many people scratching their heads.

Injury-stricken defender Micky van de Ven has been a difference-maker when on the field, and now just back from his latest muscle problem, he promised to give Spurs a big boost coming into this game, especially after sitting out last weekend’s win over Brentford in preparation.

Instead, Postecoglou has decided to hold Van de Ven back from this big game as well, a risky decision that has a more long-term aim but also feels confusing. If Van de Ven is healthy, and was rested last weekend, what’s keeping him from taking the field today?

With Spurs out of contention for European places, there’s little left to play for in the league the rest of the year, leaving the EFL Cup as their best chance for reward in an otherwise trying campaign. For Postecoglou to sideline his best defender while protecting a 1-0 first-leg lead is a risky decision that could invite significant criticism if they fail to reach Wembley.

Liverpool vs. Tottenham lineups, team news

Slot confirmed that Trent Alexander-Arnold will miss this game as he recovers from a thigh injury. Joe Gomez is back from a hamstring issue but is more likely to return in the weekend FA Cup match at Plymouth Argyle.

With everyone else fit, it’s been tough for Diogo Jota to find a way into the starting lineup, as the likes of Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, and Cody Gakpo have developed a strong relationship up front. Jota could potentially get a start here as Slot hopes to give him time in the rotation.

Slot said on Wednesday that he had not decided on his goalkeeper for the game, but Alisson is favourite to start after getting the nod in the first leg.

Liverpool projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Alisson (GK) — Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson — Gravenberch, Mac Allister — Salah, Szoboszlai, Gakpo — Jota

The latest addition to Tottenham’s incredible injury list is Radu Dragusin who tore his ACL in the 3-0 Europa League win over Elfsborg last week. Spurs thankfully have both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero back in training, but Ange Postecoglou revealed he will hold both back from this match as a precaution, even as Van de Ven was also rested for the 2-0 win over Brentford on the weekend.

Postecoglou indicated he is hoping to have a slew of reinforcements en route over the next two weeks. Guglielmo VicarioBrennan JohnsonDestiny Udogie, and Timo Werner are all thought to be returning soon, but not in time for this cup game.

James Maddison and Dominic Solanke are two who need a few more weeks. Postecoglou confirmed Mathys Tel will be available to make his debut, as is new centre-back Kevin Danso.

Tottenham projected starting lineup (4-3-3): Kinsky (GK) — Porro, Danso, Gray, Spence — Sarr, Bentancur, Bissouma — Kulusevski, Richarlison, Son
