Newcastle United welcome Arsenal for the second leg of the EFL Cup semifinals on Wednesday.
The Magpies head into this one with the upper hand after securing a commanding 2-0 victory in the first leg on enemy turf. Despite suffering a setback against Fulham in league action over the weekend, they’ll be eager to dust themselves off and punch their ticket to the final with a strong performance at home.
As for Arsenal, they have a mountain to climb after their lackluster display in the opener. However, the Gunners romped to a 5-1 win over Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday and will hope to carry the momentum.

Newcastle vs. Arsenal lineups, team news
Joelinton is the big injury doubt for Newcastle, the Brazilian having been substituted during the Fulham loss with a knee complaint.
Winger Harvey Barnes is not yet ready to return from a thigh injury, and with Miguel Almiron having returned to MLS in the transfer window, the Magpies are looking a little bit light in terms of options.
However, there is a chance that Callum Wilson could be back after returning to training towards the end of last week.
Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schar are available again, having missed the first leg through suspension.
Newcastle United predicted XI (4-3-3, right to left): Dubravka (GK) — Trippier, Schar, Burn, Hall — Guimaraes, Tonali, Willock — Murphy, Isak, Gordon
Injured: Joelinton (knee, doubt), Wilson (thigh, doubt), Barnes (thigh), Lascelles (knee)
Suspended: None
Arsenal are not likely to make too many changes from their thrashing of Man City, although Ethan Nwaneri could have earned a starting spot ahead of Leandro Trossard.
Bukayo Saka remains sidelined, along with Gabriel Jesus, while Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu are not expected back until later this month.
Arsenal predicted XI (4-3-3, right to left): Raya (GK) — Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Lewis-Skelly — Odegaard, Partey, Rice — Martinelli, Havertz, Nwaneri
Injured: Saka (hamstring), Jesus (knee), White (knee), Tomiyasu (knee)
Suspended: None
Newcastle vs. Arsenal Prediction
Newcastle have a 2-0 over Arsenal going into the match but the two teams have had contrasting runs since the first leg of the semifinal. The Magpies were in the middle of a nine-match winning streak in all competitions from December extending into January.
However, Eddie Howe’s team has showed a drop in form recently, losing their last two league matches.
The Gunners, meanwhile, have built some momentum. Fresh off the 5-1 win over defending champions City, Mikel Arteta and his players will be feeling more confident of overturning the aggregate deficit than they would have about a month ago.
- Prediction: Newcastle 1-4 Arsenal
