The Chicago Bears are positioning themselves to improve their offense by hiring head coach Ben Johnson but could potentially make another coaching addition.
Johnson spent the past three seasons as the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator. In 2024, the Lions offense led the league in points per game and was second in total yards per game. He brings his experience to a Bears team needing offensive help.
Despite Caleb Williams setting the rookie franchise passing record for the Bears with 3,541 yards, throwing for 20 passing touchdowns and only six interceptions, the Bears’ offense averaged the fewest total yards per game in the league with 284.6.
FansSided writer David Hunt suggested that the Bears consider hiring Jon Gruden to help unlock Williams’ full potential.
“If the Bears want to surround themselves with talented coaches, they should consider hiring Jon Gruden as an offensive consultant,” Hunt wrote in an article title “One Ben Johnson coaching staff idea that is not as crazy as it sounds.” “It may sound far-fetched but this is a role Gruden is familiar with. Back in 2023, the New Orleans Saints brought Gruden back to the sidelines as their offensive consultant.”
“What makes this opportunity more intriguing is the fact Gruden has explained how he would turn rookie quarterback Caleb Williams’ season around during his time as an analyst for Barstool Sports. Gruden clearly has high praise for the rookie quarterback and seems to have a game plan for helping him develop into a franchise quarterback.”
Chicago has the pieces for a solid offense with Williams, D.J. Moore, Rome Odunze and D’Andre Swift. Elevating Williams’ level of play would elevate the entire offense. If bringing in Gruden as a consultant could help unlock his potential, the Bears should consider bringing him in.
