The Spurs wasted little time acquiring a second star to pair with the prodigious talent of Victor Wembanyama.
On Sunday, less than a day after the Lakers and Mavericks turned the NBA world on its head with the blockbuster Luka Doncic-Anthony Davis deal, San Antonio did the same. The Spurs agreed to a multi-team deal with the Kings and Bulls that will see longtime Sacramento standout De’Aaron Fox land with Gregg Popovich’s side, Zach LaVine (and an armada of first-round picks) join the Kings, and a spate of role players arrive in Chicago.
Fox looks primed for another breakout. He’s a perennial All-Star-caliber talent, even if he hasn’t garnered that sort of recognition all that many times. With his captivating blend of swiftness, poise, and cunning, Fox figures to make a big impact for the Spurs, both in the present and in the future.
With that, here’s what you need to know about Fox, from age and stats to contract details and everything in between.

De’Aaron Fox age
Fox is 27. He won’t turn 28 until Dec. 20.
A one-time All-Star and one-time selection to the All-NBA third team, Fox brings speed, craft, and guile to a Spurs roster already teeming with potential, namely in its front court in the form of 21-year-old Wembanyama.

De’Aaron Fox contract details
Fox signed a five-year, $163 million contract with the Kings in 2021.
Year | Salary | Option |
2022 | $28,103,500 | No |
2023 | $30,351,780 | No |
2024 | $32,600,060 | No |
2025 | $34,848,340 | No |
2026 | $37,096,620 | No |
Fox is eligible for a new contract at the end of the 2025-26 season, although it’s very possible San Antonio locks him up on a long-term deal before then.
At present, Fox is the 39th highest-paid player in basketball. He’ll immediately surge to the top of the Spurs’ wage list and will likely remain there for some time, especially if the two sides agree to an extension.
A tidal wave is on the horizon in the Alamo, however. Wembanyama will be eligible for the supermax as soon as 2028. Real GM predicts the salary cap will leap to $187.1 million by the end of the 2027-28 year. Supermax deals typically comprise 30-35 percent of a team’s salary cap, so Wemby’s prospective offer would likely see him net upwards of $60 million a year.
For all of Fox’s qualities, he’s not quite in the same tier as his newly minted teammate. That’s music to San Antonio’s front office’s ears, however; with a lack of accolades to his name, Fox shouldn’t put the Spurs into too much of a precarious position in the short- or the long-term.
The Spurs still have maximum flexibility with several mid-tier contracts (Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, Harrison Barnes, Chris Paul) and Wembanyama. Stephon Castle, and Jeremy Sochan on rookie deals. They are not currently in the luxury tax, nor bumping up against the first or second apron.
Vassell is signed through 2028-29 at less than $30 million AAV, while most other veteran deals run out after next year. So, even factoring in Fox’s deal and eventual extensions for Wemby and Castle, San Antonio will have no problem acquiring another big-time talent while staying out of the second apron in the near-term.
Beyond that, Wembanyama will just be entering his prime, so the possibilities are endless as more players are drawn to playing with the Spurs supernova like Fox reportedly was.
When will De’Aaron Fox be a free agent?
Fox is currently slated to enter free agency at the conclusion of the 2025-26 season. He’ll be 28.
Fox could very well have a queue of suitors seeking his services once his contract dwindles to an end. Then again, he might agree to an extension with the Spurs before even hitting open season.
